Emeritus Fellowship

The University Grants Commission floated the Scheme of “Emeritus Fellowship” to provide an opportunity to the superannuated teachers who have been actively engaged in research and teaching programmes in the preceding years to undertake research, without any restriction of position or pay scales.

About the Emeritus Fellowship Scheme

The "Emeritus Fellowship" is a scheme of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, aimed at providing an opportunity to highly qualified and experienced superannuated teachers to pursue advanced research in their respective fields of specialization. The fellowship enables retired teachers to continue contributing to academic research and knowledge creation in recognized higher educational institutions across India.

The fellowship may be undertaken in:

  • Universities, Institutions, and Colleges recognized under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956.
  • Deemed-to-be Universities eligible to receive grants from UGC under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
  • Universities, Institutions, and Colleges funded by the Central Government or State Governments.
  • Institutes of National Importance.

Benefits

The following assistance is provided under the scheme:

  1. Honorarium of ₹31,000 per month for a period of two years (non-extendable).
  2. Contingency Grant of ₹50,000 per annum (non-lapsable) for:
  • Secretarial assistance.
  • Travel within India related to the research project.
  • Stationery and postage.
  • Consumables.
  • Books and journals.
  • Equipment required for research.
  1. Permission for one foreign visit per year related to the approved research work, subject to prior approval of the host institution and UGC, with no financial liability on UGC.
  2. Medical facilities and other institutional privileges available to university faculty members, excluding housing facilities.
  3. The fellowship is awarded for a maximum period of two years or until the fellow attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

Fellowship Slots: Total: 200 fellowship slots at any given time

  • 100 slots for Science disciplines.
  • 100 slots for Humanities, Social Sciences, and Languages.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The applicant must be a superannuated teacher from a recognized university, college, or institution.
  2. Selection is based on the quality of research work and publications produced during the applicant&#39;s service career.
  3. The applicant must submit a well-defined, time-bound research proposal.
  4. The fellow may work under the scheme up to the age of 70 years or for two years from the date of award, whichever is earlier.
  5. The applicant should not be holding any other position or gainful employment at the time of joining the fellowship.
  6. Target Group: Highly qualified and experienced superannuated teachers of recognized universities, colleges, and institutions.

How to Apply for Emeritus Fellowship

Application mode: Online

> Application Process

  • The applicant visits the official UGC website.- Navigate to the &quot;Scholarships/Fellowships&quot; section.
  • Click on the online application link for Emeritus Fellowship.
  • Register by creating a user ID and password.
  • Complete the online application form with the required details.
  • Upload all prescribed documents, including the Undertaking Certificate duly signed by the Head of Department and Registrar/Principal/Director of the proposed research centre.
  • Review the application carefully before submission.
  • Submit the application online.

> Notes

  • Applications are invited once every year through notifications published in newspapers, Employment News, and on the UGC website.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • In case multiple applications are submitted, only the latest application will be considered.

> Selection Procedure

  • Applications are evaluated by an Expert Committee constituted by UGC.
  • Fellowships are awarded based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee.
  • The fellowship becomes effective from 1 April of the selection year or the actual date of joining, whichever is later.
  • UGC reserves the right to withdraw or cancel the award without assigning any reason.

> Joining of Fellowship

  • The selected candidate must join the fellowship within three months from the date of issue of the Award Letter.
  • Failure to join within the stipulated period will result in cancellation of the fellowship.

> Procedure for Release of Grants

  • Fellowship funds are disbursed directly into the awardee&#39;s bank account through a UGC-designated bank.
  • The awardee must submit:
  • Copy of Award Letter.
  • Joining Report with photograph, address, and contact details.
  • Every three months, the awardee must submit a Continuation Certificate to receive the next installment.
  • After completion of one year, the fellow must submit and present a Progress Report (approximately 1,000 words).
  • The fellow must also submit the accounts of contingency grants in the prescribed format.

> Aadhaar Requirement

  • Aadhaar is mandatory for disbursement of fellowship benefits under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism.
  • Aadhaar is used as the primary identifier for releasing fellowship grants.

> Feedback and Completion Requirements

  • The fellow must submit a report on the research work completed under the fellowship.
  • Upon completion of the fellowship, the research work and published research papers must be uploaded to the INFLIBNET Centre Repository.
  • A comprehensive final report must be submitted.
  • An Emeritus Fellowship Completion Certificate will be issued after successful submission of the required documents.
  • The final two installments of the fellowship will be released only after submission of the feedback report and research work in the repository.

> Transfer of Research Place

  • Transfer of the research institution may be permitted only once during the fellowship tenure.
  • The transfer must be approved by the concerned University/College/Institution and intimated to UGC and the designated agency.

> Resignation

  • An Emeritus Fellow may resign from the fellowship through the concerned University/College/Institution.
  • Fellowship benefits will be released only up to the date of resignation.

Exclusions

The award is liable to be cancelled in the following circumstances:

  • The awardee is found ineligible at any stage during the fellowship tenure.
  • Submission of false or misleading information.
  • Misconduct by the awardee.
  • Unsatisfactory progress of the research work.
